Guiding Thought

Today I decide to give my heart reign. Trusting in love, assured with its gentle comfort, I invite my heart to lead me with joy and peace to joy and peace. I surrender my mind and will to my heart’s love.

“Remember”, I tell myself, “the drawings are not about art; they are not about creating something ‘beautiful’; they are not about technique, or style, or about getting anyone else’s approval. They are only about feeling, and feeling a connection with something deeper inside; they are about your relationship with your Self”.

I remind myself of this fairly regularly, because I never really know what I am doing when I start to color for this Journey, yet I put the pictures here, on display for your eyes, for your judgment.

It’s not that I worry about your criticism, about whether or not you like my drawing/coloring.

It’s that I would not be able to explain the drawing to you if I tried. I have no idea (generally speaking), why I do what I do. I just connect, listen, pick up a colored pencil (whichever one feels right), and ask “what do you want now?”. Then I draw/color something.

In a letter to Madame D’Epinay, Jean Jacques Rousseau wrote:

Learn my vocabulary better, my good friend, if you would have us understand each other. Believe me, my terms rarely have the common meaning; it is always my heart that converses with you and perhaps you will learn some day that it speaks not as others do.

I feel like this statement could be applied to the Guiding Thoughts, through which my heart converses with me –or your heart converses with you– and I am learning its vocabulary. The heart has a language which we must learn to know it better.

It’s a language of abstraction and color, and everyone’s heart has a different vocabulary. Somehow through this dialogue we understand each other better.
