In a tarot deck, the first card is the fool, symbolized often with a man in a jester-like suit with a stick and bundle slung over his shoulder as though he is starting out on a journey. He has a flower in the other hand, which symbolizes freedom, and a dog dancing around his feet, urging him forward. He seems oblivious to the fact that he is headed toward a cliff, and a straight drop down. The card can symbolize the wisdom of innocence or the foolishness of ignorance.

This was one of the images that came to me as I was doing the picture. I felt as though the image was telling me of my own journey.

Here I am doing the first journey of a two-year cycle, but more than that, it is the first Journey of the beginning of 25 cycles. In other words: a big beginning.

Am I the wise innocent, or the ignorant fool?

I feel like both…at the same time.

On the one hand, I’ve been doing the Journeys long enough that I have some wisdom and knowledge about them, and about myself, on the other hand, I’m embarking on something so much bigger than I am or what I think I know that I can only seem foolish in contrast.

Either way, the message is clear: this is a beginning, the start of something new, and my journey can take me whichever way I choose.

All of the wisdom I’ve gained up to this point pales in comparison to what I have yet to learn, but hopefully it will prevent me from falling off a cliff.
