What memories do you have of beauty? Are beauty and freedom related? What are you learning passively, simply by showing up to think about beauty every day?
Reflection / Contemplation
A phrase I now put into each card I write for weddings comes from my mother. It essentially says that marriage is freedom. This statement is counter to the disparaging humor directed at the institution and the realities of divorce. I am fortunate to be in a marriage and have enough relationships outside which support this statement.
If we are fortunate enough to be in Beautiful relationships, then we are free. We are free to become ever more of our true selves. The container of the relationship is such that it supports us knowing ourselves more deeply and giving us the opportunity to express ourselves.
Mind you, it is not always a pretty picture or easy process. The mirror always reflects back on us and it is held by those who are closest to us. There is a bit or a lot of grit in Beauty is there not? I am in it for the long haul, this marriage, relationships, freedom, Beauty.
When I think of what I name as Beauty, I see freedom as well. For all of my waxing on about pottery or nature, there is the principle of freedom at work. This coaxing and reflecting back urges a totality of expression. An artist, regardless of medium, is always coaxing the word, paint, clay body to give the best and full expression of it essence.
Nature does this coaxing too, with deep, long geological forces, weather, and soil conditions. With the right relationship, that apple tree outside of my studio window is given the opportunity to show its best self, season by season. That sounds like freedom to me. And Beautiful too.
