Guiding Thought

In my natural state of Freedom, my mind knows only serene tranquility and Oneness with All. Nothing need be done, for there is no more to do. I am perfect, whole, and complete. Satisfied and filled full, my energy overflows to manifest only the Good, the Holy, and the Beautiful.

Reflection
Steve

I went for a walk this morning, down at the beach with a friend. We walked, we talked we stopped often just to gaze at the water, lapping on the sand and rocks. At those moments, it was enough to just be, and experience the peace of the water, the waves, the mountains, the ferry boats. Nothing need to be said, nothing more to do or say.  And there is something special about sharing these moments with a friend, knowing that they are pausing too, and taking it all in. It all seems complete at this time.

I thought about Freedom, and how lucky we are to be able to come to this environment only a few minutes from home. Having the Freedom to walk and talk as we will. Free to experience this oneness with all. The water calls, it beckons me. I cannot imagine walking along the shore without these pauses, without taking the opportunity to stand still, and just take it all in. There truly is nothing more to do.

Simple. To experience wholeness, to simply be. So often my journey is an intellectual search. If I can just read the right book, crack the one koan, meditate deeply enough. If only.

Simple to just be, to pause at the water’s edge, and experience the sights, sounds and smells. No analysis needed. That is Freedom.

    Reflection:
About a week ago, I had a fleeting moment of complete understanding of this Guiding Thought, without knowing this Guiding Thought would be coming up. It was like catching a shooting star out of the corner of my eye. I saw it, then it was gone. I “saw” the perfect flow of God through me, flowing out, doing/acting; “I” acting for “Thou” in perfect Harmony with Divine Will, in perfect alignment with All that Is, as me.

“This is how it’s supposed to be”, I thought. “This is how we are meant to relate with God, with the world”. It is True Freedom, our natural state of Being, in Union with God.

The Guiding Thought nails it. I am currently unable to re-capture the sense of understanding that I had when the shooting star passed, but I am very grateful that I have this Guiding Thought to remind me and propel me to replicate it, to live it.

In contemplating my “natural state of Freedom”, my initial thought is that I’ve not been feeling particularly “free” of late. Rather, I’ve been feeling a bit like a caged animal. Today, I gained a new level of Freedom. First of all, a number of physical barriers were removed and I am able to move more freely about the confines of my home. AND, on a deeper level, the Freedom has manifested as a state of mind. Often, in the last several days, I’ve had thoughts of “I can’t”, or “I shouldn’t”. I’m reminded of a conversation with a Buddhist nun who responded to any such statement with “according to whom?” Obviously, I’m the one, my brain, my ego, my rules, establishing boundaries and limitations. Without those, there truly is “no more to do”. My energy overflows – it just doesn’t quite look like the frenetic overabundance I thought it should. It flows quietly, strongly, peacefully.

In my natural state of Freedom…
I find today’s guiding thoughts to contain the “both/and” theory of operation. How is it that I can be in a space where there is nothing to be done, and yet manifestation flows? As humans, we can be highly polarized in our thinking, and yet…
I know I help create this space in my work and it is what I hope for as I engage bodies on my massage table – this creation of space which holds the dynamic for creative manifestation. I feel it in my hands as tight muscle tissue relaxes and my clients take a deep sighing breath. Peace, space, dynamism.
Another opportunity for access is the breath. Most of us, and very much me, don’t give much attention to our breathing, especially the pause, the space between inspiration and exhalation. This space holds deep potential. There are some breathing techniques which direct great attention to this in between space. I find that within this pause, stillness, Oneness there is also a dynamism, that potential to manifest that which is Holy, Good, and Beautiful.
This pause within my breath is at play for me today. Time and space.
