Fully Human –Journey of Beauty 02.09.07

Guiding Thought

How may I be aware of myself as Beauty? Not just as beautiful, but as Beauty Itself? How can I exist as Beauty–how can I be Beauty? How may I Know my Self as the Beauty I Am?

Reflection / Contemplation

I was in a continuing education course a number of years ago, as required by my massage profession to maintain my license. The instructor, an osteopathic physician, was presenting information on neural development and the brain. It was all very interesting and pertinent to the course, but there was one statement that he made, which caught my attention. “We do not fully become fully human until we are around 11 or 12 years of age.” What was really being said was that consciousness does not set in until then. I bet this concept and exact time of occurrence in our species continues to offer lively debate among philosophers, neuroscientists, psychologists, and mystics.  I want to be in on that conversation.
What strikes me about this statement is that I was about that age, perhaps a year or two older, when I truly knew something about myself. My memory is vivid. To this day I can recall with clarity where I was in the room, who all was in the room, the time of day, the lighting, even what I was thinking, etc. I made the choice to be a wise person, and I knew that it involved head and heart interaction. I “knew” that wisdom could not reside wholly in the head, by being book smart, head smart.
How is it that I knew? I was observant enough at that time to know that I was different from my siblings and as much as I tried, I could not be them. This coming into my humanity, my consciousness, my ability to be self-reflective was perhaps the starting point for the choices I have made in my life.
As I reflect on today’s guiding thoughts, my awareness, existence, knowing myself as: fill in the blank___________, requires engagement with my consciousness, in whatever way that grabs me. How may I be aware of myself as Beauty? There are lots of ways for sure, and ways that are truly reflective of who I am. But it all comes down to choice, doesn’t it? I choose to be engaged with my own self-awareness.

Inner Beauty –Journey of Beauty 02.09.02

Guiding Thought

What is inner Beauty? How do I recognize it in others? How do I recognize it in myself? How do I cultivate inner beauty, especially when there are questions about what it is and how to recognize it?

Reflection / Contemplation

I wonder if inner beauty is just that? It is just because it exists; we exist.  I recognize it in what is around me, in others, and even myself. I am inclined to think it exists even when it is not of my focus.
Last summer I participated in a course on the Spectrum of Love which over the course of a week’s time took us through a meditative process of engaging objects, people (including ourselves) and situations.  We started out very simply, with observation and moved through a myriad of states of recognition, acknowledgement, and others on the way to Love at the end. It was a building exercise that started small by way of awareness of location and engagement that eventually included the difficult and challenging areas of our lives (people and situations), both personal and on the world stage.
I came away from this course with a reinforced understanding that all things, beings, people, etc., have some inherent Beauty in their very existence. I was presented with an opportunity to notice and take the experience deeper if I so chose.
There is an apple tree outside of my studio. I am lucky enough to have it in view throughout a portion of my treatment sessions.  And right now the blossoms are in early bloom. In the last few years I have really paid attention to the cycles of the seasons and the steady and varied expressions of this tree. What I really admire about this tree is its ability to be and stay a tree. When I remember, or move into an awareness, I send appreciative thoughts to this tree. We had a bumper crop last summer. Was this tree saying “thank you” back to me?
Back to the cultivation of inner beauty, it requires that intention and attention that I wrote about yesterday. That is the action piece, the day to day work. The how varies. But underneath all that, I have to choose to do it. Like that tree, I know I will get something in return.

What Kind of Travel Companion are YOU? –Journey of Courage 02.09.37

Guiding Thought

Love is strong! Powerful! I embrace Love and wield it through my awareness of Oneness. Oneness destroys the illusions of the mind, of the past, and of the material world. I move forward courageously with Peace in the Truth of Love and Oneness.

Contemplation / Reflection

I like to travel. I’ve noticed over the years that how a trip is planned can depend a great deal on who I’m traveling with. I’m a fairly spontaneous person. That’s not an issue with some travel companions. With others, they need to know, before we leave, exactly where we’re going, how long it will take to get there, where we will sleep, where we will eat, what we’re going to stop and see and how much it’s going to cost. They will also want to know if the car has been recently serviced, what kind of mileage we might expect, and how much we’ll spend on fuel, and what time we’ll be home. Check-in time, check-out time, rest stops and snacks may also need to be pre-planned. And don’t even get me started on how the weather will be and what we need to pack! My awareness of Oneness has helped me to realize that, while not necessarily important to me, these things are often vital to the Peace of mind and enjoyment of my travel companion. I’ve also learned that, after a few experiences of these differences, I, too, feel more comfortable with a bit more advanced planning. So, we meet in the middle. A little less planning for my companion, a little more for me. This is a demonstration of Peace in the Truth of Love and Oneness. And we BOTH have a much more stimulating and pleasurable experience because of it.

The Grass Is… –Journey of Courage 02.09.34

Guiding Thought

I am safe in Divine Love’s assurance. I have the courage to face the ignorance and illusions within myself and root them out. I allow the Light of Love to enter my mind and heart. Divine Love shines within me destroying anything false, transforming me from within.

Contemplation / Reflection

My best friend is on a river cruise in the Netherlands. For only a moment, I thought I was jealous. I wanted to be there with her, sharing an amazing experience. The next moment, Divine Light shines, and I was able to “root out” that thought and cheer for her. I’m glad her life is so blessed. What an opportunity! She flew there in business class and the riverboat holds only 136 passengers. She’ll be treated royally. I know she will have a memorable experience and I’m very happy for her. Early this morning, the fog rolled in. I thought “oh no, a damp day.” Then I heard the fog horns. I LOVE the sound of the foghorns over the water when I’m snuggled warm in my bed. And, of course, the fog lifted and it’s a glorious, sunny day. We walked in the local botanical garden and witnessed the blooming of rare “black” trilliums. I also took photos of black grass. Despite our illusions, MY illusions, the grass is NOT always greener somewhere else! And green grass isn’t necessarily the best grass!

It’s easy, sometimes, to think “it’s going to be a bad day”, when Divine Love jumps in and shows us it may have been just a “bad” moment. Maybe even that moment wasn’t “bad”. It was simply a harbinger of “good” things to come. Things I wouldn’t necessarily recognize as “good”, if I hadn’t had the thought of “bad”. It’s all part of living in a world where we have the illusion of duality. Can’t have dark without light. Can’t have up without down. Can’t have good without bad. And it’s all just labels and illusion. The truth is, it just IS!

Teachings of Starbucks –Journey of Courage 02.09.33

Guiding Thought

Love is unconditional. I choose to be unconditionally devoted to the love which is unconditionally devoted to me. I embrace life in love as my True nature. Connected with All in Love, I stand boldly in my heart-center, unwavering in my dedication to Unity of Life in Love.

Contemplation / Reflection

I do my best to write my responses to the daily Guiding Thought from an experiential perspective. The Thought itself seems often to be heavily based in a spiritual or philosophical light. When I think about the seeking many of us do in looking for God, the Creator, answers to the unknown, I wonder at what value such seeking can do us if we don’t find ways to apply it in our day-to-day lives. As far as experiences today, there have been only a handful of inter-personal activities. When I look at those, though, I see heart-centered, unwavering dedication to a Life of Love. We went to Starbucks. We go there often enough that we know most of the baristas and they know us, including our “usual” beverages of choice. These wonderful individuals are always cheerful, friendly, patient and tolerant of their client base. There’s a rule about “no sleeping”. Unless it’s very crowded and/or a person is snoring loudly, a patron’s peaceful nap is quietly embraced. When someone acts out in a disruptive way, one of the staff steps out from behind the counter and sits next to the disruptor, speaking softly, calming, encouraging more settled behavior. When the power is out for hours, the manager sends her staff to another location to work so they don’t lose the income they anticipated. If the lock on the door is broken and the door can’t be opened, this same manager sits in her car near the door and cheerfully points out another nearby shop. She appears calmly accepting of an uncomfortable situation. Each of these incidents, and many others, shows unwavering dedication to Unity of Life in Love. I choose to use these employees as role models for embracing life in love as true nature. Sometimes I wonder if my unwavering dedication to Unity of Life in Love would be solid enough that I could qualify for a position at Starbucks!

Wholeness in Pieces –Journey of Courage 02.09.32

Guiding Thought

When I attune my mind to the Oneness that is All of Life, I understand my place in Wholeness. I am the very Presence of Life, and this Presence of Life is me. I am blessed through this understanding. In return I bless all I encounter.

Contemplation / Reflection

This was a day of “wholeness” in pieces. Today was a great day and I FEEL Oneness and Wholeness!  Been thinking a bit about the attachments we make to things and the freedom and lightness that comes from letting go of those attachments.  My sister-in-law moved recently. She was in a very urban, traffic-jammed, run-down apartment where she had lived for over 25 years. Today was the day for the final exit inspection of the place she’d vacated. After 25 years of a dead-end routine, depression and a disability diagnosis, the place was in less than pristine condition. She was terrified, and feeling insecure about the process and asked that someone in the family accompany her as her advocate. I “was elected”. It didn’t begin well, with the inspector not showing up anywhere nearly on time. My sister-in-law was feeling angry, discounted, disrespected. I’d been visualizing this event, but only the actual inspection itself. And that part went very smoothly. While they still need to send her the paperwork, I believe that penalties, if any, will be slight compared to the disaster she had been fearful of. While I didn’t particularly WANT to be the advocate, I now understand that it was the Presence of Life that put me in this role. It was my place in Wholeness to be there to speak kindly to the inspector, to speak reassuringly to my sister-in-law, to simply “hold the space” for a positive outcome.  In retrospect, I was in the right place to bless this encounter and to assist her in letting go of attachment to this place and the negative experiences it represents to her. She drove more than two hours home to her new place. Instead of heavy traffic in a densely populated area, “home” for her is now surrounded by lush fields, astounding mountain peaks, deer outside her windows and breathtaking waterways nearby. All of this at a significant reduction in rent and other expenses. And when I arrived home, my husband had sold a truck he’d been attached to for several years. There’s an open space in front of our house that’s free of that attachment. I had a place in the Wholeness of this day. I am blessed, and in return I offer blessings and gratitude for all of the encounters of this day.

Generational Reflection –Journey of Courage 02.09.31

Guiding Thought

Life is a process of Self-discovery. I embrace All of Life, for All of Life is who I am. As I embrace Life as my Self, I come to understand Life as me. Life embraces me gently and joyfully in return.

Contemplation / Reflection

I have a great-granddaughter celebrating her first birthday today. I wish I could be embracing her physically, but she lives in another state. My Self-discovery for the day is a whole lot of mixed feelings. First, saying “great-granddaughter” makes me think “I’m old”! But, in a workshop I participated in years ago, we were encouraged to choose an age we really enjoyed, and stay there in spirit. So, I’m forever 27! Old enough to have gained a little wisdom (I hope), young enough to still want to sing and dance and play through life. Next, feeling mixed about this little girl. For her first birthday she’s wearing a pink tutu and a white lace shirt. She’s adorable. She’s a tiny princess. But, it’s so very GIRLY.  And, she’s being raised in an incredibly loving family with three older brothers who adore her. I’m sure, somewhere along the way she’ll learn to play with boy toys. And, in truth, what I feel about any of this doesn’t matter a bit. I’m not present to influence the gender training of these children. Their mother is a brilliant and multi-talented woman who is a great role model.  These children will grow up learning of love, for themselves and for one another. And I can’t change my age. So I’m embracing Life as it presents itself. I understand that I have biases and preferences. As I embrace the meaninglessness of those, I feel life embracing me gently in return. Life is what it is. And that’s more than okay with me.
