Guiding Thought

Our own Loving Presence is our personal connection with Divine Mind. Attuned to our own Loving Presence, we Know ourselves as Whole and Holy. As we feel our Inner Unity, we know: this is all we want; we have found all we seek.

Between 2005 and 2013 I studied A Course in Miracles pretty intensely. I don’t mean that I stopped at doing the daily lessons. I did those, then I read the text, took notes and wrote…and wrote…and wrote. That was before I was doing the Journeys. In a way, at least a portion of these Journeys grew out of that study. Part of what I wanted (and still want) to do with the Journeys is to do a cross-reference research project for a bunch of the themes in ACIM, to answer questions like, “How does purpose relate to atonement“? or “How does atonement relate to forgiveness“? or “How does forgiveness relate to healing“? or “How does healing relate to purpose“? You see how nicely that would fit within the framework of the Journeys? Everything is interconnected; each “theme” gives insight into other “themes” and those links bring greater understanding to both those themes and all others.

I had the good fortune at that time of having a flexible job schedule, and often did not have to be out of the house until 10 or 11 am. I would read-study-write from 5 or 6 am until 9 or 10. I would be completely absorbed, completely focused, never getting tired, but rather getting energized. I remember often thinking, “This is all I want; this is all I want to do”.

That feeling, “this is all I want; this is all I want to do” has recurred in my life more broadly with spiritual practices, and spiritual writing and studying.

As with a lot of spiritual practices, like meditation, the practices connect a person to their Loving Presence, their link to Divine Mine, their link to their own Inner Divine.

It’s a great place to hang out, there, with your own Loving Presence. It’s a high, really. I was thinking earlier today that it’s sort of like the runners high: you have to push through certain mental (chemical-hormonal-energetic) barriers, but once you get into “the zone” it feels amazing and you can just coast for hours, and the high carries you through other parts of your day and life.

Another similarity with running is that, like an endorphin high, the spiritual high eventually wears off. We go out into the world, where there is drama, among people who do not connect with their Loving Presence, who don’t and can’t understand wholeness, unity, compassion…so we end up not only losing the high, but expending more energy to protect ourselves from an onslaught of other people’s emotional energy. It’s a good day when I don’t get sucked down; it’s a better day when I can not only maintain my own Inner Harmony, but can also share it with others–where I can actually perceive that their energy is lifted and lightened through our interaction.

believe that we–all people– are headed to a time when the high does not wear off and every day is a better day. I think that the intense emotional energy in the world right now is a mass purging. All the crap is coming to the surface, so that it can go away for good.

More people are meditating. More people are doing spiritual practices. More people are realizing that it’s a great place to be, connected with Love, connected with others through Love.

What takes you to your zone? What are the practices that you do that take you to the place where you say, “This is all I want”? If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. It’s there, waiting for you.

Guiding Thought

As I unite in consciousness with my own Loving Presence, I unite with Divine Mind. Divine Mind is Infinite Being—it is now, here, always. I exist in Divine Mind, as It does in me, united forever—One. It leads me to Itself through my consciousness of my Self: my consciousness of my Self, as Infinite Being, is Oneness with Divine Mind, is my Peace, is my Wholeness, is my Unity with All.

I must unite in consciousness with my own Loving Presence. This is my responsibility. My Loving Presence resides in Divine Mind, which exists eternally, everywhere–waiting for me to unite with It in consciousness.

In Sanskrit, there is a word for consciousness. That word is chit. Most often, it is used in conjunction with the word sat, which means Truth, or absolute existence, and with the word ananda, which means absolute bliss. Together, these three words form the word satchitananda, which is a description of God: Absolute Truth and existence, Pure consciousness, and total bliss–joy beyond words.

Why does this matter?

One aspect of God, from the Vedic (Hindu) tradition is the quality of pure consciousness, and since this Guiding Thought has a lot to do with consciousness, it seems important today.

Why is it important today?

Because we, as individual “drops” in the Ocean of the Divine are naturally, inherently One with pure consciousness. “I exist in Divine Mind, as It does in me, united forever—One.” We are not separate from Divine Mind, not separate from that Ocean of Pure Consciousness.

We only think we are separate from It. Or, in other words, our consciousness is too limited to think of ourselves as Infinite and Eternal.

This is what it means to unite in consciousness with Divine Mind–it means to begin to expand our awareness of who we are to coincide with how that Infinite and Eternal mind already Knows us–as Infinite and Eternal.

This is why it’s our responsibility, and why Divine Mind is waiting patiently. It already Knows us as who and what we really are–Infinite drops in an Infinite Ocean (yes, take a moment to wrap your head around that one). We are the ones who cannot see ourselves as our True Reality; we are the ones who are limited by our minds, perceptions, senses, thoughts, and beliefs.

We are One with Divine Mind. We are the satchitananda of Satchitanda.

Guiding Thought

Our Inner Divine Mind is always expressing itself in all ways through our Own Loving Presence. This is its True Nature, thus this is our True Nature. We turn to our Inner Divine Mind as the Source of our happiness, purpose, and fulfillment. We allow It to flow through our Own Loving Presence and appear as all our activity, as every visible form and experience we could desire.

What do I believe? What do I want to believe? Who am I? What is my purpose? Do I believe that the Guiding Thought is actually guiding me? Is it taking me the direction I want to go?

Sometimes, I just need to do a check-in with myself. Questions like these help pull my head down, out of the clouds; they ground me, and bring me back to the very basic questions about life, and why I do what I do, why I think what I think, why I am the way I am. They ground me in me.

I know, I know, that sounds a little against the grain for someone who does these Journeys to be a better version of myself, to think with a love for all mentality, and to think in terms of a Universal One, a Divine Unity.

But the fact is, I (this body, this personality) exists in time, in 3 dimensional space, interacting with other bodies and personalities in time and 3 dimensional space. There may be Oneness here, but while we are still perceiving both time and 3D, we are perceiving difference, and separation. Time and space constructs are necessary for our learning how to no longer perceive through time and space.

We are learning to let go of perception. Perception–what we sense through our senses–is the seat of our interpretation of everything “out there” as both different and separate. “All” we need to do is to step through the perception into being our infinite and eternal selves. It only takes an instant, a “twinkling of the eye”. Here is how A Course in Miracles puts it:

What is time without a past and future? It has taken time to misguide you so completely, but it takes no time at all to be what you are. Begin to practice the Holy Spirit’s use of time as a teaching aid to happiness and peace. Take this very instant, now, and think of it as all there is of time. Nothing can reach you here out of the past, and it is here that you are completely absolved, completely free and wholly without condemnation. From this holy instant wherein holiness was born again you will go forth in time without fear, and with no sense of change with time.

If you are tempted to be dispirited by thinking how long it would take to change your mind so completely, ask yourself, “How long is an instant?” Could you not give so short a time to the Holy Spirit for your salvation? He asks no more, for He has no need of more. It takes far longer to teach you to be willing to give Him this than for Him to use this tiny instant to offer you the whole of Heaven. In exchange for this instant He stands ready to give you the remembrance of eternity. (emphasis mine)

Many times I wonder, “why am I not there yet? how long does it take? If it only takes an instant, why isn’t the instant now?”

That’s the only reason it’s a journey. Because it takes far longer for us to decide to give a mere instant to the Peace of Heaven than for the Peace of Heaven to enter our consciousness.

I believe that I am learning. I believe that I am closer to accepting the Truth of Our Inner Divine Mind always expressing itself in all ways through our Own Loving Presence.

I believe that I somehow my Inner Divine Mind is the Source of my Purpose, and as I live that Purpose, at one with Divine Mind, I am being myself, as my Self.

Each day, each step, collapses time, until I can truly give that instant to the Holy Spirit, and I will experience Heaven in the twinkling of an eye.

Identify with Life: Journey of Courage 2017 – Day 021

We are half-way done! Give yourself a big hug–only 20 days left to go! The pronoun changes again for this round, now we will be using “we”. This is the “unifying round”. I am not just I, you are not just you. We are we, together, all One. I cannot be in this by myself or for myself, only with you and for you, equal to myself. This round serves to expand your notion of “you” into this unity.

Guiding Thought

Life is a process of Self-discovery. We embrace All of Life, for All of Life is who we Are. As we embrace Life as our Self, we come to understand Life as ourselves. Life embraces us gently and joyfully in return.

This is almost another way of saying, “we are spiritual beings having a human experience”, but there is so much more to it! Let me explain:

We need to start in the middle of the Guiding Thought for this: All of Life is who we are. I repeat: All of Life is who we are.

What is All of Life? Everything. All that exists. The Oneness and Unity of everything. We cannot step outside of Life. Wherever we go, we are in Life; however we exist, that is Life. Life is everywhere, all-inclusive, all-permeating, infinite. We are this Life, individualized. We cannot not know all of this Life as its totality (for how can our limited senses and understanding know infinity?), but we do recognize that we are in the sum that makes up the totality. If we want to understand more of the totality of Life, we need to be able to increase the part of ourselves that is the part of infinity which is individualized as us, within the totality.

How do we do that? First, we have to accept that we are in life, embrace All of Lifebegin to recognize that everything we experience is an expression of Infinite Life individualized. Each encounter, each thought, each emotion expresses Life. We embrace each tiny detail of Life as an expression of the totality of Life and begin to see the Oneness and Unity that is at the heart of every encounter, emotion, and thought.

Second, after we notice every detail abiding within Infinite Life, then we can begin to identify with that Life as who we are. This is the meaning of a spiritual being having a human experience. The extent to which I identify myself with Infinite Life is the extent that I am conscious of being a spiritual being, having a human experience. It’s the whole identifying with the infinite that makes all the difference.

This is why Life is a process of Self-discovery. We cannot bring infinity into ourselves all at once; we cannot understand all of infinity with any sensory perceptions, or a limited human body. But we can expand our awareness and understanding of our connection with All that Is, and through that awareness and understanding we are assured of our connection with All.

Each time we understand in a new way, expanding our consciousness, that energy goes back into the All that Is, expanding All, taking on new forms. This is how Life embraces us gently in return. Our growth that happens in our process of self-discovery feeds the consciousness of All, which then generates an impulse, and excitement (like an atom becomes excited), which goes back out for All to again experience and make new discoveries.

It’s so much more than just claiming myself as a “spiritual being”. It’s a lived experience of awareness, understanding, and assurance of my individualized connection with All. Only I can do that, through my own Self-discovery, for I am All of Life.

Guiding Thought

Divine Love-Light is the Source of All. It is all good, all God. This Source is always seeking expression through me. My awareness of my personal identity as this Source provides me with infinite fulfillment and prosperity.

Day 31, welcome to Round 3! How are you doing? So far on this Journey, we’ve gone through the benefits of being still, how to overcome “financial slavery”, the Law of Increase, the constancy of Divine Mind, gratitude for small things, and life as a living-koan. Aren’t we done yet? With all that intensity of the first 2 rounds, I might have short circuited myself. It was day 21, the first day of round 3, where I noticed that I wanted to be in “coasting” mode. That certainly characterized most of round 3 for me—I definitely let the momentum carry me. Thank you, by the way, for helping me out—your effort during the last 10 days helped to carry me through. Whew. And here I am, ready to shift gears again. Let’s finish this.

One day Saraha asked his wife for some radish curry. She prepared the dish, but while she was doing so, Saraha entered a deep meditation, sitting in Samadhi for twelve years.

Upon emerging from his meditative state, Saraha immediately asked for his radish curry. His wife was astonished, “You have been in meditation for twelve years; it is summer now and there are no radishes.”

Saraha thus decided to intensify his practice and go to the mountains for meditation in complete solitude.

“Physical isolation is not a real solitude,” replied his wife. “The best kind of solitude is complete escape from the preconceptions and prejudices of an inflexible and narrow mind, and, moreover, from all labels and concepts. If you awaken from a twelve year Samadhi and are still clinging to your twelve year old curry, what is the point of going to the mountains?”

The first thing I thought when reading this was, “I wonder what radish curry tastes like?”

The second thing was, “that is some dedicated wife…”

The third thing was, “yeah, 12 years, I’d be asking for something to eat, too!”

And finally, “Wow, even Samadhi does not eliminate the attachments of the mind.” When he woke up, he was basically right back where he started.

I sometimes worry (sort of…) that I am too involved with my mind, because many of my practices are contemplative. You’ve seen me go through this with myself, thinking too much… worrying that I think too much. This is one reason that I engage my right-brain with drawing and coloring sometimes, why I do movement meditations, and why I bathe, breathe, and sit with fire —balance.

There are many paths to enlightenment, lots of ways to get there. Everyone must find the path that is right for them. I think a lot, it is part of my path; it’s right for me. Maybe you are not a big thinker, but you like ideas, so my path helps you on your path—I am happy to do the heavy-thinking! We all help each other.

Here are some thoughts about thinking (this is in contrast with the no-thought method, like that of Saraha):

  • Thoughts are useful, when a person strives to be aware of their thoughts, and to think the highest thoughts possible.
    • I’ve mentioned that I don’t listen to the radio or pop music much. Here is the reason I don’t. In my recent “coasting” state, I wanted my brain to relax, so I listened to the radio to and from work for several days. One day, this song came on: Problem by Ariana Grande. I had never heard the song before, but for almost 36 hours after hearing it on the radio, I had this in my head, I got! One less problem without ya! I got! One less problem without ya! I would catch myself “singing” this song in my head—WTH? I don’t want to think about having one less problem without the person I love in my life. Why is this song in my head? It’s NOT what I want. The mind is great at mimicry and repetition. Caveat Auditoris!
  • This means changing thoughts, when and where appropriate. As in the above example, when would become aware of these “problem” thoughts in my head, I quickly changed my thoughts to something nicer.
  • Spinning thoughts are not useful. Remember the mind is really good at repetition. Spinning thoughts are those that keep going in a loop. Often, they are thoughts of guilt-fear-blame-shame: I shouldn’t have done that… why did I do that?…ugh, I’m such a terrible person… oh, I hate myself for being a terrible person…I shouldn’t do that…
    • Spinning is like doing a 360 over and over in the same place. Eventually, you’ve dug yourself a rut, and even if you get out of the rut, it’s very easy to fall back into it. The spinning needs to stop! And the rut needs to be filled in, so that it is level, and you can’t fall back into it. When thoughts are looping like this, it’s enough to shift your thoughts to positive thoughts, like thoughts of Love and Oneness—this gets you out of the rut. Also work at healing the thoughts that got you there in the first place, let those thoughts go, ask for Diving Healing of your mind, and ask for help in cleansing and purifying lower-personality traits, characteristics, and thoughts. Only thoughts that evolve (or heal) bring you to the peace of mind to know that you won’t fall back into the rut.

I’ve never wanted to reach Samadhi (in this lifetime, anyway, I don’t know about other lives). I am not interested in “freezing my mind” in one point (and then waking up wanting radish curry). I would rather befriend my mind, gain its confidence, and teach it to work with me toward a higher, more loving way of being (and thinking!). For me, that is the point; that sums up the Journeys. Every Journey, I am teaching my mind to work with me through thoughts of Love and Oneness. I am calling down the highest Mind there is, and asking It to think through my mind, to be my thoughts, to guide my actions.

My mind loves the work, and it’s finally at a point where it does not resist (too much).

“Myour”: Journey of Purpose 2.0 – Day 04

Guiding Thought

My Inner Divine Mind is always expressing itself, in all ways, through my own Loving Presence. This is its True Nature, thus this is my True Nature. I turn to my Inner Divine Mind as the Source of my happiness, my purpose, and my fulfillment. I allow it to flow through my own Loving Presence and appear as all my activity, as every visible form and experience I desire.

My + your + our= “myour”. The first round uses “my”. The second round uses “your”. The third round uses “our”. By the fourth round, “myour” –the space where all of these live at the same time, not just me, not just you, but you and me, together–should be more readily accessible through myour consciousness.

Is it significant that this is round one and I’ve already started thinking/feeling in terms of myour?

Today, this Guiding Thought shifts continually between a subjective me and allusions to the collective myour.

My Inner Divine Mind: even though the “my” begins the Guiding Thought, Divine Mind is all ours, together. My, in this case indicated how the One Divine Mind which we all share comes through me. The Guiding Thought says this Mind is always expressing itself thought my own Loving Presence, but it is also always expressing itself through your Loving Presence–the same Mind, all our presences.

This is its True Nature. It is myour True Nature.

The same Divine Mind that is the Source of my happiness, purpose, and fulfillment is the Source of your happiness, purpose, and fulfillment is the Source of all our happiness, purpose, and fulfillment.

When I allow it to become every visible form and experience I desire, since it is also yours, it will bring me what is also best for you, what is also best for all of us. (The reason it does not seem to “work” this way is because there are still too many people, resisting, not allowing, blocking the flow. As more people open to Divine Mind’s intelligence, allowing it to flow through their own Loving Presence, we will see the tangible results more and more quickly, more and more frequently.)
